Frequently asked questions
What makes a case study actually sell clients?
Numbers and specificity. 'Improved their site' is a claim; 'cut checkout abandonment 34% in 6 weeks' is a case study. The C-A-R structure (Challenge → Approach → Result) works because it mirrors how buyers evaluate risk: what was broken, what I did about it, what changed. Lead with the result headline, put the metric in the first paragraph, and keep the whole thing under 500 words.
What if my client's results are hard to measure?
Measure the process, then. Hours saved per week, turnaround time, error rates, revenue per lead, time-to-hire, NPS — almost every service has a metric if you instrument it for one month. If a truly qualitative result is all you have, get it into the client's own words (a quoted testimonial with their name and title) and document the before/after state in detail.
Can I use a case study if the client didn't explicitly approve it?
Check your contract first — a portfolio/usage clause covering this is standard and should be in every agreement. If the clause exists, you're covered. If it doesn't, ask: 'I'd love to write up what we did for [specific result] — okay if I use it as a case study with your name, or would you prefer it anonymized?' A 30-second ask gets 90% of approvals; an assumption gets takedown requests.

How to Write a Freelance Proposal That Wins the Job Without Undercutting Your RateMost proposals lose because they answer the wrong question. A structure that leads with the client's outcome, bounds the scope, justifies the price, and makes saying yes easy — without racing to the bottom.
